Cardiac MRI of Chick Embryos in-ovo

The chick embryo is a well-known model for cardiovascular research, which  is commonly used for the study of cardiac development. By using a self-gated cine MRI method that incorporates a navigator-based retrospective gating technique, we are able to obtain high quality cardiac image of the embryo inside the egg.

The resulting left ventricular functional parameters from six chick embryos ar 20days of incubation were: end-diastolic volume 69 ± 15ml,  end-systolic volume 31 ± 7ml,  stroke volume 38 ± 9ml, ejection fraction 55.5 ± 1.5%, left ventricular mass 97 ± 10mg, post mortem mass 99 ± 11mg.
