Acute lesion volume during MCAO and prior to reperfusion was assessed by DWI. Reperfusion was induced and rats recovered and then final infarct volume was assessed at 7 days following MCAO. The extent of tissue salvage can be assessed within animals by comparing the baseline lesion volume during MCAO with the final infarct volume following reperfusion.
